(FRACCU)

Federation activity 2003-2004

The fact that a lot of NGOs shared UNESCO’s ideals and principles and manifested their opening to partnerships with national and international organisms has lead to the establishment of FRACCU (Romanian Federation of Associations, Clubs and Centres) in July 1999. FRACCU has been founded by 5 NGOs and has juridical personality. The intentions of the federation are to be found in UNESCO’s principles and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by UNO’s General Assembly in 10.12.1948. UNESCO’s ideals are promoted through specific actions in education, science and cultural fields. The main objectives of FRACCU are to facilitate cooperation among the clubs, centers and associations that are its members, to supply specialized reference material, to initiate and support the establishment of further UNESCO Clubs, encouraging contacts with clubs or similar organizations in other countries and cooperation with UNESCO National Commission. The activities mentioned below are initiated and implemented by FRACCU by itself or in partnership with certain members of FRACCU.

• Creation Camp for Youth Vatopedi, Greece – as a participant on behalf of Romania

AN OVERVIEW OF THE UNESCO CLUBS MOVEMENT IN ROMANIA

The changes that appeared in Romania’s political, economical and social life in the last 15 years also influenced the civil society. The numerous non-governmental organisations, associations and foundations that are now more than 10.000 constituted an expression of enthusiasm, ideals and people’s preoccupation in different fields of activities. NGOs that excelled are those with environmental, social problems, culture and art, human rights, youth organisations, tourism and those who had less success are associations with scientific and educational profile. Even if a lot less organisations remained active, this movement had to be taken into account, the results obtained by some of the organisations are noteworthy.

The movement of UNESCO Clubs in Romania contains actually more than 45 NGOs (30 of them are pro active) that cover all the domains UNESCO has interest in (according to national priorities) and promote the same solidarity attitude of collaboration and experience exchange. The following percentual partition in interest domains and club activities can be noticed:

• 10% preservation of national traditions and culture

• 7% environment and tourism

• 7% journalistic activities

• 5% youth

• 3% promoting peace and human rights

Among the actions deployed by the UNESCO clubs between 2003-2004 we recollect:

BULGARIA: Synthesis of activities of your Federation for the years 2003-2004

The NNEK-UNESCO was founded in 1970, and it is the first club in the UNESCO clubs movement in Bulgaria.

In 1973 after successful participation in the campaign for preservation of the ancient Cartage (Tunisia), the club was declared officially “Club UNESCO”. The activities were carried out under the auspices of the UNESCO Director-General Mr. Rene Maheu, and he gave the idea and the creation of the club logo in person. The logo, the ceremony and the act of declaration as “Club UNESCO” were officially published into the UNESCO adopted programme final documents.

The created in 1973 under the auspices of the Director-General of UNESCO Mr. Rene Maheu logo is still the acting official logo of the club.

The NNEK-UNESCO everyday activities are focused at:

- Creating conditions for and contributing to all-round and harmonious development and creative self-expression of its members;

- Streamlining practical activities to new non-standard directions, to generation and experimental implementation of new forms of research, of methodologies for revealing and developping creative abilities, initiative, entreprise and invention;

- Promoting, in accordance with the UNESCO principles the international cooperation and understanding, as well as consolidation of peace and security;

- Assisting, on the basis of the interdisciplinary approach to studies and scientific expeditions, to the education – culture – science synthesis and realization of a concrete contribution in this field;

- Securing complex conditions of work to individual and collective researches and on the basis of independent plans;

- Publishing the succeses and achievments and stimulating the contribution in the field of education, science and culture;

- Enhancing the general background of its members through direct contacts with the rich national and world material and spiritual culture;

- Providing conditions, through interaction of theory and practice for full accomplishment of its goals by assisting to the professional orientaion and creative self-expression and normal activity of other organizations working in the sphere of education, science and culture;

- Helping the establishment and development of the UNESCO clubs movement in Bulgaria, as well as their efforts to achieve results of mutual interest on a national and international scale.

By the specificity of its activities in the field of scientific expeditions, the NNEK-UNESCO is unique in the world movement of UNESCO clubs.

In its long and fruitful history, the NNEK-UNESCO held over 300 scientific youth expeditions, exhibitions, forums, conferences and seminars. Among them also these with such international and scientific importance as that one in Cartage (Tunisia), Cuba, Mosambic, Vietnam. In the archives of the NNEK-UNESCO is conserved a whole treasure of materials for the Bulgarian cultural and natural heritage, collected with the participation of the most eminent Bulgarian and foreign scientists and experts.

The NNEK-UNESCO used to support during many years the most experienced non-professional diving group for scientific research in Bulgaria, in the fields of marine archaeology and marine biology. The exposition of the museum of the town of Nessebar has been collected during the scientific expeditions of the NNEK-UNESCO. All these results have contribuated this town to be included in the UNESCO World List of Cultural and Natutal Heritage.

Since the year 1999, the NNEK-UNESCO is co-founder and co-organizer of the “National Student Information Centre of Bulgaria”, where all students and students’ organizations could use Internet access, PC consulting and training free of charge. Other acting projects during the period 2003 – 2004 are “The Rhodopes – cradle of civilization”, “Crossroads” and “Youth network”.

The main project in 2004 was the “Fund for studies, preservation and promotion of the cultural and historic heritage” – http://www.nnek-unesco.org/fonden.htm

During the year 2003 the NNEK-UNESCO has celebrated 33 anniversary of the club, 30 anniversary of the first UNESCO club in Bulgaria and 33 anniversary of the first diving archaeological programme.

The NNEK-UNESCO is registered upon the Bulgarian Law for Non-Profit Legal Persons. The Chairman of the Board of Managers is Mr. Eduard Geshev; the Secretary General is Mr. Nikolay Ivanov, both elected for five-year mandate by the General Assembly, held in August 2001. Mr. Eguard Geshev and Mr. Nikolay Ivanov are inscribed by the Court of Law in Sofia as representative persons for the NNEK-UNESCO, separately.

At the 6^th regular congress of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (5-10.09.2003 – Limassol, Cyprus), the Chairman of the BM of NNEK-UNESCO Eduard Geshev was elected Vice-president of the World Federation for region Europe and North America, mandate 2004-2007.

Synthesis of major activities and characteristics of the Clubs Movement in your country (fields of interest, age group..) :

There is no formal structure of national federation in Bulgaria, although several attempts for creating national federation were made by NNEK-UNESCO. The basic cause is the weakness of the created UNESCO clubs, which could not withstand the severe conditions of the market economy, established in Bulgaria last years.

The NNEK-UNESCO is a full member-founder and represents Republic of Bulgaria in the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (since 1981), and in the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (since 2001).

In 1991, by official recommandation of the Bulgarian National Commision for UNESCO, the NNEK-UNESCO took the name “National” (since 1970 the name was only NEK), and assumed definitely the task to act as a national UNESCO movement representative in all international contacts.

The NNEK-UNESCO is assisting the activities of the other Bulgarian UNESCO bodies, and has founded in 1990 with the help of some Bulgarian national youth organizations two new structures - the Bulgarian Association for Cooperation with UNESCO and the Students’ UNESCO Association. Both associations are working with the material and financial support of NNEK-UNESCO, and are using its office space and technical equipment for free.

During its long history, the NNEK-UNESCO has always been acting with the entire and full support of the Bulgarian National Commission for UNESCO.

GREECE: PLANNING 2005

JANUARY

Presentation of the 2005 calendar, with the participation of 52 artists, members of our club. Its aims are:
To give the possibility to the artists to communicate with each other, by changing elements and ideas, through the dialogue of the colors, of the artistic ways and thoughts. That way, transforms the calendar to a “Bridge of communication and dialogue among the artists”
To promote the work of the artists to the general public and in the same way to sensibly the citizens, and especially the young people, to get interesting and love the arts
The presentation will take place with the presentation of the paintings, which are in the calendar.
At the cover of the calendar, there are paintings of Aggelos, Georgas, Mitaras, and of the sculptor Xenoulis

In the frame of the events, of the promotion of the Monuments of the Cultural Exchange, protected by UNESCO, UNESCO Club of the Department of Piraeus and Islands organizes a 7-day trip to Constantinople from 3 to 9 of January 2005

FEBRUARY

UNESCO Club of the Department of Piraeus and Islands organizes a festive event for the financial support of its programs. The event will take place on Friday 25/02/2005, at 21:30, at “FEVER” Club. Event under the topic “Easter’s Customs and Traditions”, with the participation of groups which will represent not only Greek Easter customs but also traditional dances from Greece.

MAY

2ND Itinerary to the Greek and National Tradition, 14-15 of May 2005, at Katrakio Theater in Nikaia. The 2ND Itinerary to the Greek and National Tradition is a great event, since it is the biggest meeting of the participation of 5.500 dancers from many traditional unions, from all over Greece. It is an event, in which our tradition, our traditional music, songs and dances, as well as the beauty of the traditional costumes are promoted. The 2ND Itinerary to the Greek and National Tradition is an very important cultural event, the greatest event, ever organized, the biggest union meeting. At the 2ND Itinerary to the Greek and National Tradition traditional dances will be performed from: Athens, Ipiros, Macedonia, Pontus, Cyclades, Aegean Islands, Eptanisa, - Kithira, Dodekanisa, Crete, Thrace, and Thessalia, Roumeli, East Romilia, Mikra Asia.
Pan – Hellenic Painting Exhibition with the participation of many awarded painters.

JUNE

7th Multiethnic Cultural Festival, daily at Pasalimani, at the same time with the Book Exhibition. In this Festival over than 40 countries (groups from embassies and Unions) will take part, and will present in kiosks elements from their tradition (books, culture and national products which represent their country). Also, every evening, each country will perform to the public, culture events with music, dances, gastronomical nights, etc.
In that way, we will have a 20-day rich multiethnic event, full of culture that will take place at the Central Stage in Pasalimani.

GREEK UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN CLUB UNESCO OF PIRAEUS’ CALENDAR

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary since the signing of the Constitution of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Club UNESCO of the Department of Piraeus & Islands has issued a Collector’s Calendar for 2006, dedicated to the Greek UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The official presentation of this collection’s edition of the “2006 Calendar” will take place on Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at 20:00, at the cultural multi-centre of Club UNESCO of Piraeus, “INTERNATIONAL ACTION ART” (212, Alkiviadou Street, Piraeus).
33 years ago, the UNESCO General Conference, by adopting the decisions of the 1972 Convention, established the criteria, according to which a natural or cultural site may be considered as important enough to be enrolled in the List of World Heritage Monuments. This List was founded, and is constantly enriched, on the conviction that certain sites are of outstanding universal value from the point of view of their natural features, historical importance or spiritual significance. It also binds the Convention States Parties with the responsibility for the proper management and preservation of these sites on a universal level.
Of the 812 cultural, natural and mixed properties today registered in the UNESCO List of World Heritage, 628 are cultural, 160 are natural, and 24 are mixed, and they are situated in 137 different states.
Among the countries appearing in the UNESCO List of World Heritage, Greece has registered in it 16 sites of archaeological, historical, natural and spiritual importance –although there are still many Greek monuments which have not yet been registered in the List, despite the fact that they meet the requested criteria.
These 16 monuments are enclosed in the pages of the Club UNESCO of the Department of Piraeus & Islands’ Calendar, and embellish it with a series of exceptional photographs from the Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessalonika, Meteora, the Acropolis, the archaeological site of Vergina, Mount Athos, Delos, the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tyrins, the archaeological site of Olympia, the Historic Centre and the Monastery of Saint John in Patmos, the Monasteries of Daphni, Hossios Luckas, and Nea Moni of Chios, the archaeological site of Epidaurus, the Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos, the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, the archaeological site of Delphi, the Medieval City of Rhodes, and Mystras.
The Calendar also includes a small description of each monument, as well as the date of registration and the criteria according to which each property has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In the Calendar, one can also find a detailed description of all the general criteria, according to which a site may be registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The publishing of this “2006 Calendar” aims at projecting the Greek cultural heritage and raising awareness for its protection and development. Club UNESCO of Piraeus wishes for this Calendar to be, not only a tool of information and knowledge, but also a motivation for the competent institutions, so that more Greek sites, which meet the criteria, are registered in the List (as, for instance, archaeological and natural sites in Crete, Corfu, etc., which, unfortunately, are not yet included in the List).
It is worth mentioning that, in order for the Calendar to reach as many hands as possible, to be placed in spaces accessible by a wider public, and especially by young people, Club UNESCO of the Department of Piraeus & Islands has already begun to distribute it freely to schools and educational institutions, to public and municipal services, to cultural spaces, embassies, travel agencies, etc.
