CHILDREN AND THE MAGIC OF THEATRE

Club UNESCO of the Prefecture of Piraeus & Islands presents the performance “Theseus and Minotaur…like a fairytale”, by the “Elias Karellas Theatre of Shadows” and “Odyssey”, at the “Neo Rialto” Theatre (54, Kypselis Str. & Ag. Meletiou Str.-Athens), and invites the children on Sunday, the 5th of December 2004, at 11 a.m., to a celebration dedicated to the International Day for People with Special Needs and the International Day of Volunteers for Social Development (December 3) and to the International Child’s Day (December 11), in the framework of its educational and cultural programmes. For once more, Club UNESCO of Piraeus stands by the sensitive social groups, takes initiative, and invites children with special needs from the Special Schools “Argo”, Disabled Children of Seamen, “Kivotos” (“Ark”) Youth Home, “Aghia Trias” Orphanage, 1st Piraeus Special School, 2nd Piraeus Special School, PIKPA Special School, Korydallos Special School, Keratsini Special School, 1st Drapetsona Special School, the Piraeus Union of Parents and Friends of AMEA, the Salamina AMEA, but also, children from the Minors’ Foundation of the Piraeus District Attorney’s Office “The Good Shepherd”, and the Piraeus Chatzikyriakio Foundation. Our Club is also going to give out presents, toys and books, to the young children.

In fairytales, everything can happen. Thus, Theseus and Minotaur emerged from the thick books of mythology and became shadows behind the curtain of “Karaghiozis”. Through a voyage in legend, with respect for the traditional Theatre of Shadows, the famous “Karaghiozis”, traveling to Ancient Greece, will meet with puppets and actors, while transferring us to magic atmospheres, in his own unique way. Old figures carved in carton, numerous puppets- of human dimensions, giant puppets- special constructions, compose a performance full of laughter and emotion, with strong interpretations of songs and music, for children aged between 2 and 102 years old.

A performance with quality and respect for the spectators, fully aware of the educational role which the appropriate children’s theatre can play, offers our young friends the possibility to participate in the play, so that they can understand it immediately and, at the same time, be entertained in the best of ways.

The voices of the puppets belong to the actors: Spyros Kalogirou, Tasos Palantzidis, Dimitris Piatas, Evangelia Samiotaki and Pavlos Chaikalis. Also, play the actors: Yiota Alexandrou, Pandelis Dentakis, Apostolis Thessaliotis, Penelope Mitsotaki, Tasos Petimezas. The songs are by Pandelis Thalassinos, and, behind the curtain, plays Elias Karellas- to whom also belong the original idea, the script and the adaptation of the performance.

About the event, the President of Club UNESCO of the Prefecture of Piraeus & Islands, Mr. Ioannis Maronitis, stated: “It is with particular pleasure that we have placed this performance under our aegis, because we believe that it projects and brings forward qualities like solidarity, honesty, kindness, faith in love and bravery, and that it portrays all these features which can offer the children an important encounter of joy and knowledge, an unexpected meeting with shadows, puppets and actors.”

The performance will be given at the “Neo Rialto” Theatre (54, Kypselis Str. & Ag. Meletiou Str.- Athens), on Sunday, the 5th of December 2004, at 11 a.m.
